Mosquitoes, snakes and spiders set to increase in NSW after deluge | marywardy

NSW on Thursday confirmed its fourth case of Japanese encephalitis, which had never been seen in the state before this February.

All confirmed human cases have had links to the pig farms. NSW Health said it was likely several other cases would be confirmed in the coming weeks.Dr Gale advised members of the public to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites. She urged parents to be particularly vigilant, as children often experience the most severe cases of Japanese encephalitis abroad.

A spokesperson for Sanofi, which manufactures one of two Japanese encephalitis vaccines, said there were about 15,000 doses of its vaccine in Australia and it was “well positioned” to supply more. However, Cameron Webb, a clinical associate professor at the University of Sydney, said more water did not necessarily mean more disease. In some instances, there is too much water for mosquitoes to populate successfully, and it can take some time.

Head reptile and spider keeper Jake Meney urged the public to be on the look-out for the ground dwelling spiders in Sydney, Newcastle, and the NSW North Coast, particularly if returning to their homes after damaging storms and floods.
