The first time Jens Ambjerg-Peterson attempted to finish the Katherine Ultra Challenge — Northern Australia's flagship multi-sport endurance race — he landed himself in hospital.

"Gruelling" was the first word that came to Jens Ambjerg-Peterson's mind after crossing the finish line with a time of 10 hours in one Australia's most testing adventure races.

The Katherine Ultra Challenge starts at the crack of dawn, with dozens of swimmers navigating rocks in an open swim through the sandstone escarpment of Nitmiluk National Park. The Ultra Challenge encompassed two bike legs, a 40km road ride and 18km across a rocky mountain bike trail. In previous years, the swim and canoe leg have been altered and moved after sightings of saltwater crocodiles in Katherine Gorge but this year had the all clear.

"There are some very, very steep sections of it going up and down – but you can take it as easy or as hard as you like – you can really try pump out a quick time or you can slow down and enjoy the view a bit more," he said.
