Most N.J. residents support sex education in upper grades, fewer support it in elementary school, poll shows

The poll comes in the wake of much-debated new sex education standards in New Jersey.

this academic year, a new poll shows large majorities of state residents support health and sex ed being taught in middle and high school but are divided when it comes to elementary school.also found a majority of residents support a statewide health and sex curriculum being taught, rather than the current system that allows each district to develop its own lessons based on state guidelines.

The poll did not ask how residents felt about students learning about specific sex ed topics or specifically about their opinion on New Jersey’s updated, which the state Board of Education adopted in 2020 and implemented beginning this school year. The state’s new standards say by second grade, teachers should “discuss the range of ways people express their gender and how gender-role stereotypes may limit behavior.”

Meanwhile, 60% believe parents should have the option of keeping their children out of the lessons, while 37% say all students should have to take them.
