New speed cameras are generally in warning mode for one month, but one of four cameras in the tunnel is yet to start issuing fines.
More than 80,000 warning letters have been sent to drivers caught over the speed limit on the Rozelle Interchange .Drivers have been warned that three out of four cameras in the tunnel are now issuing fines.
Only 2,851 fines have been issued to drivers because they were going more than 30 kilometres per hour over the speed limit. "We're still having quite a few people moving slightly quicker than they should be as they get used to the road network. They're being warned, it will click into normal enforcement soon and they will get fined," he said.
Given the consequences of crashes in tunnels, Mr Khoury said speed cameras were an important tool in making them safer. "As a percentage, that's pretty good. What that demonstrates is the overwhelming majority are doing the right thing."
