It had just passed 10pm on Friday night when Bronny Walsh took a call from her son who said he had been assaulted while working as a bus driver in Launceston. She is now calling for change.
A woman said her bus driver son had spoken every day about "some level of anti-social behaviour or verbal abuse or threats" in the lead-up to him being attacked.
"We were conscious that it was building to this, for the bus drivers, because every day he would talk about some level of anti-social behaviour or verbal abuse or threats." "Fortunately there was no bleeding to the brain and no fractures to the orbital bones around the eye … but he's very much traumatised by what's happened," Ms Walsh said.Photo shows A Metro bus displaying the text "Hobart city express" on the front, driving along a road
He ended up driving himself in the bus to the Launceston General Hospital. He has since been discharged.Ms Walsh is now calling for security guards to be rostered on bus routes at night, and for security screening around the drivers to be mandatory in all Tasmanian buses.
