Arrest over Port Hedland house fire that killed three children
The mother of three children who perished in a house fire in Port Hedland yesterday is in police custody and being questioned over the blaze, police say.
Firefighters were called to a fire at a home on Anderson street yesterday afternoon and found the bodies of the three children inside the house.Acting Deputy Commissioner Allan Adams said the mother of the children was assisting police with their inquiries."I do know that the mother was spoken to in the immediate aftermath of the fire being observed and police officers attending that scene," Mr Adams said.
"I can't describe how I think the family and friends are feeling at the moment, but it's horrific, it really is," he said.Anderson Street remains cordoned off, with police tape preventing access to the modest single-storey house, part of a duplex. Earlier today a family with three children dropped off soft toys near the scene, and another woman left a small bouquet.Resident Lorraine Injie said the town was devastated by the news.With a population of around 16,000, Port Hedland is the major shipping port of the Pilbara and the biggest bulk export port in the world, where the region's iron ore riches are loaded into giant carriers and exported.
