Mother Nature is forecast to rain on Ekka’s parade, with up to 100mm of rain predicted for parts of Queensland’s southeast as the annual agricultural show gets into full swing. Widespread cloudy skies and showers are a “distinct possibility” from Sunday into early next week, the Bureau of Meteorology says. That would oust the typical August “Ekka winds” which usually hit the Royal Queensland Show, which is fondly known as the Ekka after its original name the Brisbane Exhibition.

“The position of the weather systems and resulting conditions is quite different to the dry, cool Ekka winds for mid-August. “Similarly damp conditions are possible in other areas of eastern Queensland from about Mackay southwards into northeastern parts of NSW.” The predicted showers are thanks to a high pressure system pumping moisture across eastern parts of the state, where the potential for wet conditions ramps up from the weekend into early next week.
