Stuart Kettlewell's side more than held their own for large spells against the champions
Celtic broke Motherwell's hearts in in a battle at Fir Park in which the hosts more than held their own for most of the game.
The Steelmen gave as good as they got for most of the game and forced stand-in keeper Scott Bain into big stops to deny Harry Paton and Blair Spittal, amongst others. It said a lot for the defending champions that they replaced Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Kyogo ink one fell swoop in 75 minutes.Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell kept faith with the side that lost 1-0 against Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday. Pape Souare returned to the bench.
Celtic were more attacking in the second half and Gustaf Lagerbielke had a tame header saved in 51 minutes. Maeda had a great chance to break the deadlock, collecting a pass from Taylor but chipped high and wide from about six yards.Motherwell passed up the best chance of the gamer in 72 minutes when Slattery sent Spittal through on goal, but his shot was well blocked by Bain.
