Motorists are warned to remain vigilant on the roads over the Easter long weekend as double demerits and heavier fines come into play for some states and territories from Thursday.
Roads across the country are set to be packed over the weekend, with many Aussies expected to spend the major holiday away from home.

Picture: Monique HarmerIn WA, speeding, drink/drug-driving, failure to wear seatbelt, running a red light, illegal use of mobile phone while driving and driving a vehicle in a manner of with a device to evade detection by a speed camera are all double demerit offences.
Seven people were killed in a tragic Easter long weekend on NSW roads last year with over 4,200 speeding infringements handed out.Double demerits apply all year round in Queensland with the holiday period not treated any differently for road-users. Eleven lives have been lost on Victorian roads on the past five Easter long weekends while 87 lives have tragically been taken state-wide in 2023 – up 33 percent on last year.
