A former member of the Balmoral Royal Guard, who is in the queue to see the Queen, has told how he enjoyed several dinners and barbecues with her and she even insisted on doing the washing-up.
The 48-year-old, from Richmond, south-west London, spoke of one occasion when she insisted she wanted to do the washing-up after an informal barbecue.“It was in doing that, that I got to see how hard working she was. In Balmoral, where they go to relax, she was always still working. He said: “I am going to go and absorb as much of it as I can, in that moment, and say goodbye, and say thank you for her service and the way she watched over us for her reign.
The former teacher said he is attending “partly on behalf of my great uncle”, and talked of meetings the archbishop had with the Queen as she sought spiritual guidance prior to her coronation.: “I met him when he was still archbishop. He became a surrogate grandfather to me after my grandfather died.
“I will probably have a lump in my throat . She has been Queen all of my life and she just had an aura about her which any politician doesn’t have.”
