, the PM’s independent ethics adviser, to fully investigate the matter, branding it another example of “Conservative sleaze”.
Lib Dem chief whip Wendy Chamberlain said: “There are serious questions for Rishi Sunak to answer over any potential conflict of interest, and any extra income his family could receive from his own government’s policy.”, added that the Prime Minister must explain why he “failed to come clean when asked about the shares his family held in a company now set to financially benefit” from the Budget. “He must urgently correct the record,” she added.
In a lengthy back and forth with journalists, the Prime Minister’s press secretary claimed that Mr Sunak had followed Commons rules on registering interests “to the letter”, despite failing to publicly reveal his wife’s shareholdings. “The ministerial code sets out a process by which ministers following any appointment that they may have into Cabinet declare their interests,” she said. “They do that in writing normally to their permanent secretary – in this case it was the cabinet secretary. That process was followed to the letter by the Prime Minister.”
