The Canberra office of the Greens Western Australia Senator Dorinda Cox has proved staff unfriendly.

In the three years she has been a Greens Western Australia Senator, Dorinda Cox has churned through her small parliamentary staff like a meat grinder: 20 have resigned. Some have lodged formal complaints alleging her office supports a hostile culture in which employees feel unsafe.who said complaints to the office of Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt and the Parliamentary Workplace Support Service had failed to resolve the problem.

Greens leader Adam Bandt at a press conference in Perth on Thursday, where he was asked questions about senator Dorinda Cox and bullying allegations stemming from her office. The veteran also made the point that it was ironic that the Greens called for integrity in government and the implementation of a federal ICAC, yet had failed to fix something rotten in its own midst.

Meanwhile, the Greens seem unable to get their house in order. Only last year, the resignation of Victorian Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe amid a morass of claims and counterclaims revealed the party’s tendency to “greenwash” untoward behaviour. Opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum and her injudicious failure to reveal a close relationship with a bikie while sitting on parliamentary committees were catalysts for her departure to the cross benches.

At least four formal complaints have been made to the PWSS. At least five have been referred to Bandt’s office. The PWSS has refused to comment and a spokesman for Bandt said the leader’s office had no legal power to resolve disputes between staff and individual senators. For his part, Bandt ducked questions on Cox and cut short a press conference on Thursday.

The dysfunction in Cox’s office remains unaddressed and is an indictment of a political party that puts hubris above staff safety. We can only ask: whatever happened to political leadership?– Since the Herald was first published in 1831, the editorial team has believed it important to express a considered view on the issues of the day for readers, always putting the public interest first.
