A dress code sign was posted inside the venue stating anyone with a mullet would not be welcome inside.

Men with mullets were barred entry from the Cottesloe Beach Hotel for sporting the classic haircut over the weekend but it may have saved them a stint in COVID-19 quarantine as a result.

The Cottesloe Beach Hotel has apologised after a sign out told patrons people with mullets were not welcome. But the group will be able to return to the pub after hotel management backtracked on Thursday and said the dress code sign, placed at the entry to The Beach Club inside the hotel, was “an error in judgement and should not have been produced or displayed.”

While the Cottesloe venue has made it clear this is not their current policy, other locations across Perth have previously enforced a mullet ban. Perth nightclub Butterfly 73 has the decision to ban “distasteful hairstyles, including rat tails and mullets” listed on their website; part of a long list which also includes “heavily worn or damaged sneakers” and “baggy or loose fitting jeans.”

Last year Trinity College also banned mullets, calling them untidy, alongside top knots, rat tails, mohawks, extra-long fringes or other “non-conventional” styles. “I would say around 20 people per week come in to get a mullet cut. It is so varied, there are so many ways to wear them, from the traditional 80s cut to the fluffy, more stylised David Bowie look.”
