The international check-in and baggage claim halls will both be expanded while five new gates for jumbo jets will be constructed, the airport revealed on Wednesday. More gates added to the existing international pier would give airlines “more flexibility to schedule flights to more destinations at the times people want to fly,” it said. A new international travel record was set in January, with over 1.26 million international passengers processed at the airport during the month, the announcement read. Five new aircraft stands that can accommodate five widebody aircraft, upgraded waiting areas, lounge facilities and retail offerings, and an expanded area waiting area for meters and greeters are among key parts of the planned upgrade. Preliminary works on the first stage of the project will begin in September after the opening of the airport's new road network – which will include a new pick-up and drop-off zone. “Because of the challenges of building in a 24-hour live operating environment, the privately funded expansion will be delivered over several years,” the announcement said. Picture: Melbourne AirportMelbourne Airport chief executive officer Lorie Argus said the terminal expansion would improve passenger experience and accommodate growing demand for flights. “As Melbourne grows, demand for air travel is growing too and we are investing billions of dollars to deliver the infrastructure we need to accommodate that,” Ms Argus said. “Increased capacity on our airfield and terminals will allow airlines to schedule more flights to more places, which will give consumers and exporters more choice. “We’ve spent several months working collaboratively with the airlines to ensure these plans meet their needs, while also delivering an improved experience for our travellers in both arrivals and departures.” Upgraded waiting areas, lounge facilities and retail offerings will be part of the expansion. Picture: Melbourne Airport“We're keen to work with the federal government on upgrades to border processing technology and facilities to help further improve the arrivals experience for international travellers,” she said. “With just one average daily international flight worth $190 million to the Victorian economy every year, these investments will help facilitate more services and secure thousands of jobs around the state." Assistant Multicultural Affairs minister Julian Hill said called Aussie airports “critical infrastructure” and said the upgrades “can't come too soon”. “Demand for domestic and international travel at Melbourne Airport is growing rapidly and Victorians and visitors alike will welcome these improvements which can't come too soon,” he said. “I welcome Melbourne Airport's work to streamline passenger movements across domestic and international terminals. “Australian Border Force will continue working closely with industry partners to improve passenger experience and ensure Australia’s airports are fit-for-purpose over the coming decades.”
