A fire in Oakland near I-580 spread to at least two structures on Friday afternoon, officials said.
A vegetation fire that started on the westbound side of Interstate 580 in east Oakland on Friday had spread to multiple homes by 3 p.m., officials said.
"Definitely more than two structures are burning," Michael Hunt, a public information officer for the Oakland Fire Department told SFGATE on the phone."Unclear the exact total." The Oakland Fire Department first shared on Twitter at 2:13 p.m. that the fire broke out near 35th Avenue and Quigley Street.
Hunt explained that while the fire started on the westbound side of 580, it was spotting and mostly burning on the eastside of the 35th Avenue overpass with homes burning on Quigley Avenue. The department initially said that the blaze was a two-alarm fire and at 2:34 p.m., reported that it was a three-alarm fire with multiple spot fires and two structures burning. By 3 p.m. Hunt said it was a four-alarm fire.
