Classically trained in Indian classical and folk music, Amita also writes and performs songs in Hindi and Kannada language.

Since moving to Northern Ireland over a decade ago, mum-of-two Amita Ravikirana has been able to celebrate her Indian heritage through music, art and crafts.

"My youngest one was born here but both of our kids feel that Northern Ireland is their home now and India is where they go to visit their relatives. I was brought up in the Karnataka state in southwestern India and music played a big part in my upbringing. "Everyone all over India will use one of these to sing. It became my friend and now I only sing with it as I feel that it and my vocals are enough."View gallery Amita added: "Since moving here I've had the chance to meet so many other artists from all over the world and I also got an award from the Arts Council NI to learn opera. Those kinds of opportunities may not have been possible had I stayed in India.

"Before lockdown I was teaching Indian music to a group of ladies who never had the opportunity to sing for three years which I'm trying to restart." They rely on donations and grants to run social and recreational activities for women's health and social well-being. BAWA also provides one to one support for women who are facing social exclusion and injustice.
