Charlotte Wilcock had been enjoying a cigarette outside her home when Anthony Stinson walked by and unleashed a horrific and random attack
The Blackburn mum spent the day at home with her 15-month-old daughter, playing and pottering around their terraced house in Primrose Terrace, Mill Hill. After tea, she settled her daughter down in bed, and went to sit on her front doorstep for a cigarette. This was an act she did most evenings. It was a day of routine and domesticity for the popular mum, who friends and family described as 'amazing, funny and a little bit ditzy'.
By the time he returned to the house he was ready to join in the party, but his anger was clear from the rap lyrics he recorded on his mobile phone. "I stamp your head on the floor, I stab your head on the floor," he spat in a chilling prophecy of things to come. Stinson crossed the patch of land in front of Charlotte's home and walked down Primrose Terrace. But a few doors down, a security light flicked on, and realising it was a dead end, he turned back.
When a neighbour's car approached, Stinson closed the front door to avoid being seen. He left the house covered in blood. In the frenzy, he left his phone in the hallway, picking up Charlotte's phone instead. The Stanley knife was still tangled in Charlotte's hair. Stinson was arrested on suspicion of murder. It was time to give his version of events. He claimed he had seen a woman's legs with a 'cartoon devil's face', laughing at him. When he was close enough, he said he kicked the devil's face but it would not stop laughing. Only when the laughter stopped did he realise he had killed a woman, he said.
As he was sentenced to life, with a minimum term of 24 years and two months, no explanation could be given as to why he attacked Charlotte, an innocent bystander, on March 3. His criminal record showed a string of convictions, including assaults on two ex partners and a conviction for rape. Injuries on Charlotte's body were consistent with those suffered by other women, who had been strangled and bitten by Stinson.
