Murphy, a former ambassador to Germany, has been a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's invasion of Ukraine a year ago.

Murphy had returned to Poland by the time the tweet went out, according to his office. He flew there on a commercial flight and is scheduled to fly to Germany Friday, where he’ll attend the 59th Munich Security Conference.

It’s an annual event meant to discuss international security policy and attracts hundreds of officials from across the globe, including dozens of heads of state. Murphy is slated to lead a panel discussion on the role local leaders can play on international issues, such as climate change and the coronavirus pandemic.

Other officials from the U.S. delegation will include Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, and Democratic and Republican members of the U.S. Congress, according to his schedule.
