NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey says the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, which was signed into law by Julia Gillard in 2012, “cannot be achieved”.

NSW Water Minister Melinda Pavey says the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, which was signed into law by Julia Gillard in 2012, “cannot be achieved”. Ms Pavey has completed a month-long listening tour of river communities and believes policymakers got it wrong when they agreed to take more than 3,000 gigalitres of water from the irrigated agricultural areas and return it to the river system.

“Locals are saying that we can’t do what was asked of us by Gillard, Burke and Penny Wong in 2012,” she told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “When you go and ask for an unrealistic amount of water out of Menindee Lakes, we saw the consequence of that in 2019, in January when we saw those dead fish. “That was a moment in time when I think everybody realised, from the greatest greenies to the best farmers, that this plan cannot be achieved as set out by Gillard, Burke and Wong.”
