ABC Melbourne presenter Sammy J stumbled across museum artefacts flowing down the gutter of a street in the city's inner north after a burst water main flooded a storage facility.

The flowing water pushed open the doors of the storage facility and swept some archaeological samples down the street.Museums Victoria CEO Lynley Crosswell said the museum lost a number of items. "I looked down and saw in the gutter, flowing past me, all these little jars and what looked like fossils streaming down towards the gutter," he told listeners on Monday morning.
"So we had wonderful neighbours who retrieved items that had been swept out ... and gave them to staff, and staff collected items as well, but it's very likely that some are still out there," Ms Crosswell said.
