Music, activism and music: Brinsley Forde interview JamaicaLeeds
“You can’t have romance without rebellion,” says Brinsley Forde ahead of performing at Leeds Playhouse as part of the Jamaica Society Leeds’ Out of Many Festival.
“I recently did an interview about a 1989 concert in Gdansk where several reggae artists were invited when they had their first non-communist government. “I have been singing about this for years but sometimes you just have to say ‘Okay, let’s do the physical side’ and that is what we are hoping to do in this coming year and beyond.” , shown at the massively popular Saturday morning pictures, offering independence for children and a welcome respite for parents. , a madcap series of seven children and their antics in and around their den – an old double decker bus.
“Fortunately, I ended up telling a friend of mine who is no longer with us, Delroy Washington as he was known, that I’d seen Peter Tosh. “I learnt so much from that little situation there it definitely was one of the inspirations that made me form Aswad. “We shared a lifetime together touring and making music – it’s hard to acknowledge we will never share the excitement of performing on the same stage,” says Brinsley.
But Aswad’s chart success did the talking and, with the band being young fathers, they were more than able to relate to the children’s TV shows that then showcased the best musical talent. “I believe that we had a certain responsibility in the sense that our lyrics were really kind of explaining what we were going through, there were times when we thought we have got to make sure that we got it right – that was the situation,” says Brinsley.
