An Australian engineering professor is urging the Albanese government respond to one of the biggest IT outages the world has ever seen by calling an inquiry.

Businesses and customers are counting the costs of the global outage that brought parts of the world to a standstill, with experts saying the big question is who will compensate the worst-affected.

Tens of thousands of Australians were impacted by the blackout, whether it was being left stranded at airports for hours when flights were cancelled, at hospitals or were unable to pay for their groceries due to some EFTPOS systems being down. Mark Gregory, the School of Engineering Associate Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, said the next step is for the federal government to step in and announce an inquiry into the outage on Saturday.

"But the difference here is this is not a cloud failure. This is actually a software failure that brought the computers to a halt," he told on Weekend Edition. "I would suggest Crowdstrike would be in the target for a large litigation around the world," he said.
