My colleagues and I wished the office was less boring. Careful what you wish for | WORK THERAPY

Earlier this year I talked to my closest colleagues about our workplace being a bit dull, and we all agreed everyone seemed low on energy and imagination. We agreed it would be great if we could all get some pep back in our step now that we’re back in the office more frequently.

I think you probably have been tricked by a genie. Either that or you’ve accidentally made a wish on a monkey’s paw. The best way of working this out is by using a quiet moment well away from the office — maybe on a weekend, and preferably while you’re on holiday — to really think carefully about who these newcomers are and why they annoy you.I remember being similarly annoyed by an energetic work interloper several years ago and deciding after thoughtful consideration that I had every right to be.

Yes, I had in my early 30s gone the double stick - stick-in-the-mud, stick-up-the-bum. But I don’t look back with embarrassment. I was not engaging in fanaticism; the boiling, unsavoury energy of this new work person warranted my curmudgeonry.
