“It was like looking through fog. Every day I could see less and less”
Imagine living in fear of losing your sight every single day. As horrifying as that sounds, it was a reality for Laura Parker.
She first started seeing warning signs in early 2021 when she noticed her left eye felt tired. She decided to visit an optician but they couldn’t see any problems initially. “My left eye was so bad, I honestly thought I was going blind,” she said. “It was very scary. I had a scan and the doctor saw a very dense cataract in my left eye. I was shocked! My eye had been checked so many times over the previous months but no-one had seen a cataract – it had literally come from nowhere.
Now able to see clearly with both eyes, Laura feels as though she has gained back her independence. “It feels amazing not to be dependent on people for favours and feel that I have my life back,” she added. “This was a massive wake up call for me – we take our vision for granted and yet it can change in an instant. Our eyes need care and attention, we should appreciate them every day.”
