A Place In The Sun host Jean Johansson shows us around her stunning Scottish mansion as she calls for greater diversity in TV and tells us why there’s no place like home
Picture the scene – a secluded beach, a driveway nestled among sun-dappled trees and, at the end of it, a glorious, imposing 19th-century home, originally built for a Scottish whisky baron.
“When I first auditioned for the show, I didn’t get it and I was completely devastated,” she reveals. “My agent at the time told me the opportunity would never come up again. Presenters never leave – look at Jasmine Harman, Laura Hamilton and Scarlette Douglas. But I just had a feeling that it would happen for me, and it did.”
“We grow close during those five or six days and we love a party,” Jean laughs. “If you finish work at 5pm on a beach, there’s no way you’re heading back to a hotel room. We often go for dinner and a few drinks. I’ve made good friends over the years. Viewers love the nail-biting moment when the house hunters decide if they want to make an offer, but can be left frustrated if they view multiple properties without putting in a bid. That doesn’t bother Jean, who’s skilled at keeping her cool.
Landing such a coveted role isn’t something the star, who has also joined new Channel 4 property show Key To A Fortune, takes for granted. But their home wasn’t picture-perfect from the get-go. When they bought it in 2009, like any period property it needed a little TLC to turn it into the tastefully decorated dwelling it is today.
“Since he doesn’t have that in the school curriculum, that’s down to me to teach him about people like Josephine Baker .”
