Brian's terminal mesothelioma diagnosis means he's had to give up the things he loves, and he's keen to become one of the first people in WA to exercise his right to voluntary assisted dying when the laws are enacted next month.

"I covered the whole building myself top and bottom," he said."The last four or five years I've been worried a little bit, wondering am I going to escape this?Brian lives alone in a house in Maddington and can no longer do many of the things that used to bring him joy. Some years later, his new partner also passed away suddenly after a fall.

The laws passed the WA Parliament in 2019 and, following an 18-month implementation period, will come into effect on July 1. "Although both prior to and following the passage of the Act in late 2019 we used to be contacted about various end-of-life issues, the inquiries now are more numerous but also more practically focussed," president Stephen Walker said.

"We are in regular contact with the Health Department and are providing information also to medical and nurse practitioners to encourage them to sign up to do the necessary training."Brian's adopted daughter is one of the handful of people he's spoken to about his intention to end his life this way.
