Just a few hundred metres from the CBD, tiny sea dragons swing on nets in the harbour, dolphins slide into waves like needles through fabric, bull sharks roam the inlets and waterways chasing seals that like to sun themselves on the Opera House steps, and the little fairy penguins nest in their rocky burrows.– fish who a colleague once told me sound like federal politicians – leatherjackets, gropers, goatfish and dubious frogfish.
As these creatures cavort, crawl, copulate, hide, glide, ripple and seek along our ocean floors, above we walk around the perimeters, working, playing, grieving, laughing, making love, breaking up, sorrowing, delighting, being human. And we draw strength from those waters in ways we could barely articulate, or understand. As well as inspiration.
Very few of us will have ever explored every nook and cranny of this city. There is always more to discover …But, what I love is that just a corner can contain entire worlds – my corner, Cabbage Tree Bay, changes daily, and constantly amazes me. Today, I swam over a grey nurse shark, trailing yellowfish like ladies in waiting.
