I’m sure they will. But since we’re all happy with the arrangement, I wonder whether the real issue around all this is a set of negative perceptions which, at this moment in time, we’d do well to question. All Grown Up: Nurturing Relationships with Adult Children
With property prices and spiralling rents making it almost impossible for my children’s generation to afford a home, especially in London where we live, it may be time to rethink our ideas of what makes a successful adult. I recognise that we’re fortunate to have a house big enough for our children and their friends. I know too that having a bolthole for my husband and me means we get a break from the kids, and they get a break from us.
Space is another pinch-point : you need to have boundaries about shared and private space. Bringing friends home – whether that’s the parents or the kids – needs to be negotiated. And in these days of home working, there has to be an understanding about others’ needs for privacy. In the past, I organised the shopping and the cooking and the cleaning . These days, we have a community approach: people shop as and when; we take it in turns to cook; and we choose a time to share the cleaning as a team.
