I’m wondering if maybe all of these non-drinking teenagers might be missing out on the fun

All over England and Wales, nervous teenagers are currently putting laundry baskets and duvets in the back of estate cars, and driving off to university where they’ll unpack and then stand around feeling a bit terrified by the enormity of what’s just happened to them.

Different universities have their own ways of facilitating this, but the first week of term are basically a sea of orientations, talks, timetables and maps by day, and sticky-floored clubs by night. But in the decade since I started at university, a whole lot has changed. Obviously the pandemic made life very different, and we can all agree that the students who spent their freshers doing online pub quizzes and “getting to know you” panel events probably deserve not only a full refund on their fees but some kind of knighthood, because that’s a level of misery that no one should have to contend with.

Student unions have changed their freshers offerings to reflect what these students apparently actually want. “We’ve got less nights out at our union than we ever have before and we’ve started to implement new things. We’ve rented out the whole of Alton Towers… we’ve sold more tickets to that than we have to our returners’ club night, which is normally massive.”
