Christmas shoppers have been left stranded at Myer stores nationwide, unable to pay for items, after the store's IT system collapsed.

At 3.30pm at Myer's flagship Melbourne store in Bourke Street Mall, shoppers stood in a queue that snaked for around 20 metres to make purchases at a register that staff said was the only operational one.Staff said Myer's head office had not informed them when the system would be up and running.Shoppers queue at Myer's Melbourne CBD store.Nick Williams, 29, wanted to buy singlets in the men's section on the store's seventh level about 2.30pm.

"They've been saying they had to literally leave their [items] in the queue and just walk out," he said. "We've had a few just in our small section, but there would be more across the store I'm sure ... It's a pretty big balls-up."
