COVID-19 will 'smoulder on below the surface' and occasionally 'jump up and bite us' | Sky News AustraliaGiven the endemic nature of the coronavirus, Australian National University’s Professor Peter Collignon says an “argument” could be made to suggest politicians have been too “cautious” to reopen the country.\n\nThe Northern Territory, Queensland and other states have maintained hard line border closures despite minimal medical evidence in support of the effect of such measures in controlling the spread of COVID-19. \n\nMr Collignon said “we’ve actually done very well, we’ve not only flattened the curve, we’ve turned it and it is staying at low levels”. \n\nSpeaking of the number of new cases recorded each day across Australia he said, “there’s about 10 to 20 per day and that is likely to continue”. \n\nMr Collignon said as a result of poor messaging many people believe “we can eliminate this virus”.\n\nHowever, he said complete elimination was “unlikely” because of the “sub clinical and low-level symptoms” experienced by the majority of people who contract the disease.\n\n“It will just smoulder on below the surface and every now and then jump up and bite us”. \n\nImage: Getty
