Myle's Garrett's response comes after former Browns defensive lineman Malik Jackson took parting shots, questioning Garrett's leadership and urging him to step it up.
Jackson played with Garrett in 2021 when the Browns went 8-9 and dealt with the departure of Odell Beckham Jr. and his split with Baker Mayfield. Among other things, Jackson ripped Garrett for his lack of leadership in the meeting rooms during an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football.”
“It’s one of those things, you know, some guys just don’t have it,” Jackson said. “Especially when you have, say, me and then a Jadeveon Clowney, you have older guys in the room that can take that, but the younger guys are gonna respect the guys that they want to be like. So, Myles would just sit in the front and relax and do his thing, but when guys are looking at him, they want to do that.
“I thought I was exactly where I needed to be,” Garrett said. “I think it takes time for anyone to be a leader. Some people come in and they’re, from day one, they talk and they lead with their voice and they also lead by their presence. But you can have some great players such as Brady or who didn’t lead from day one, they had to take their time, earn their spots, earn their stripes and it starts to develop in them.
Garrett, who’s been helping his young teammates a lot at camp, has actually become a more vocal and demonstrative leader since his rookie year. Following his helmet incident with Mason Rudolph in 2019 and six-game suspension, he became closer to his teammates and engaged more with them. Before that, he kept to himself a lot and marched to his own drummer.“I don’t know exactly what Malik said or meant,” Stefanski said. “Malik’s a guy that played for us and did a great job here.
