Controversial legislation has been dumped after embarrassing the Morrison Government for the past 11 months, but we don’t know why.
We know why the Government said it wanted the process for sending offshore detainees to Australia for medical treatment eliminated, but we don’t know why Tasmania’s Jacqui Lambie suddenly agreed.
Whatever turned Senator Lambie was more effective than cack-handed attempts at persuasion from Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who at one point told the ex-servicewoman that most veterans wanted the legislation scrapped. “Let me just make the most important point right upfront: There is no secret deal,” Government Senate leader Mathias Cormann said.Crossbench Senator Jacqui Lambie speaks with the Leader of the Government in the Senate Mathias Cormann during a division in the Senate chamber. Repealing — or “repairing” it as the bill put it — was an election promise by Prime Minister Scott Morrison who during the election campaign flew to Christmas Island to warn that it soon would be full of asylum seekers lured back into leaky boats by the medevac process.
