Former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro is fronting a parliamentary inquiry examining his appointment to a $500,000 trade posting in the US. 9News
has revealed former state premier Barry O'Farrell provided him with a personal reference for a $500,000-a-year NYC trade job he secured ahead of other candidates.
"I've been lucky enough in my life journey to have met some wonderful people, and Mr O'Farrell knows my ability and capacity, he's been a supporter and a friend, and I asked him to be a referee." The former Monaro MP also described the pressures that prompted him to leave parliament, including the month of mental health leave he took in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We've heard from long-term, professional senior public servants that I was a credible and capable candidate that brought many attributes to fill this important role for the people of our great state. "From that moment I've endured what can only be described as a personal hell, unfair and unjust. I look forward today to stating my case to this committee."
