A program to train people with disability to work as coffee baristas left a woman with a "broken heart," a "broken mind" and "certified unfit for work", the disability royal commission has heard.AimBig is one of 106 providers that are part of the Disability Employment Services program

She was assigned a job coach and was employed in AimBig's BusyBeans program, which trains people with disability to become baristas. AimBig is one of 106 providers in the DES program, which is funded by the Department of Social Services . She said she arrived to find she would not be training the new baristas on a commercial coffee machine but was instead expected to teach them on a small coffee machine — the kind you would find in someone's home — set up on an office desk.

The inquiry was also told Mzia received no "proper induction and no training" on the first day and continued to ask for further development.Mzia believed some of the participants being put into the program were "not suitable". As of December 2021, there were 314,204 people in the DES system, the majority between 25 and 34 years old.
