Kean University environmental classes need to collect about 70 more pounds of plastic waste to get it turned into a sustainable bench.

Besides being an initiative that could get them a new, shiny bench, Kean’s plastic waste project has also made students aware of the plastic they use every day and how it can be recycled, says Daniela Shebitz, the chair of Kean’s Department of Environmental and Sustainability Sciences.

Once the ‘fuel was ignited,’ students began to see this project as a form of awareness and activism, started to get their families and friends involved in the process, and the momentum only grew from there, Heyniger said. Kean junior, Morgan Douglas, has also brought in large quantities of plastic, thanks to her girlfriend who works at a big box store.
