, recently traveled to Saudi Arabia at the request of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to share her expertise about the 110-year-old institution.

Her visit was part of the U.S. Department of State’s U.S. Speaker Program. “The thought that I could be a part of something so impactful for women halfway around the world was exciting,” she said. One of the highlights of her visit, Hemmings said, was meeting Al Saud. Hemmings described her as “down to earth, gracious, smart, engaging, inquisitive and knowledgeable about the challenges of women in Saudi Arabia.”

Hemmings had time to explore Saudi Arabia during her visit. “I watched the sun set in the desert, visited a date farm, toured historical sites in Aljouf city, including the museum of archaeology, and even climbed the steps of the Zabal Castle,” she said. “I bought several Abayas, which are long robes, and ate Kabsa, Muhallebi and olives. I also learned a few Arabic words from a few young U.S. Exchange program alumni over Arab coffee and desserts.
