Participants will receive $50 to $75 to complete the study.
The study will seek to strengthen the little-known conclusive knowledge of the chemicals’ link to health issues. They will undergo a blood test for PFAS, and other tests like cholesterol and blood glucose levels, which in a non-health insurance setting would cost over $400, as well as an interview about their health history and water consumption. Participants can then share the results with their health providers.
Children would also undergo behavior and school-like testing that Laumbach said are like games that test memory, reasoning, and related skills. The study has a goal of 1,000 adult participants and 300 children. It started in 2021, but the coronavirus pandemic has slowed the work, and the study has only enrolled 100 people – 75 of whom have completed it.
Paulsboro, a town of 6,000 on the Delaware River, recorded the highest rate of one type of PFAS chemical, a PFNA, before the tainted well was shuttered in 2014. The source was traced to a chemical company in the next town over –Since 2016, the town’s water has been treated with expensive equipment to remove PFAS, as well as other organic chemicals, so it’s probably cleaner than most in the state, Laumbach said.
