The chief executive of the Northern Territory's biggest legal aid provider has rejected a $1.5 million offer from the agency to settle a long-running Federal Court case.
Priscilla Atkins successfully sued the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency for trying to sack her in 2022.The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency has offered its chief executive a $1.5 million settlement after the Federal Court ruled the law firm's attempt to sack her from the role last year was unlawful.The case is set down for three days and will continue in the Federal Court on Tuesday.
In response, Ms Atkins's barrister, Malcolm Harding SC, indicated his client was seeking compensation covering the remainder of her contract, which expires in June next year, as well as a further five years of remuneration. "It would be wrong for NAAJA to get the benefit of any financial constraints … in a way that means that Ms Atkins, as the victim of its wrongdoing, is compensated to a lesser extent to what she ought to have been," he said.
