She said she would quit as an MP more than two months ago
Tory MP Nadine Dorries has resigned her Commons seat with a scathing attack on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak - more than two months after saying she would quit. She accused Mr Sunak of “demeaning his office by opening the gates to whip up a public frenzy” against her.
In her resignation letter, Ms Dorries accused Mr Sunak of abandoning “the fundamental principles of Conservatism”. She added: “history will not judge you kindly”. The Mid Bedfordshire MP, who announced her intention to resign on June 14, wrote: “I shall today inform the Chancellor of my intention to take the Chiltern Hundreds, enabling the writ to be moved on September the 4th for the by-election you are so desperately seeking to take place.”
The former minister had angered voters, opposition MPs and some in her own party by remaining in post announcing she would leave her parliamentary seat with “immediate effect” in protest at not getting a peerage in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list. Ms Dorries – whose claim that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak removed her peerage nomination has been denied by Downing Street – had said she was delaying her exit while she investigated why she was refused a seat in the Lords.
On Friday the Lib Dems said deputy leader Daisy Cooper would lay down a motion demanding Ms Dorries returns to the House of Commons by September 14 or face a 10-day suspension.
