From a trans-Tasman tour de force for Bangarra Dance Theatre, to a Vincent Namatjira retrospective featuring ‘that’ portrait of Gina Rinehart, there are plenty of shows to get you into the spirit of the week.
will do so while rocking out with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a concept which has proved popular enough for a second night at Hamer Hall to be added.
Sultan, whose mother is a direct descendant of land rights pioneer Vincent Lingiari, will perform songs from his breakthrough 2014 albumDan Sultan, seen here performing at Bluesfest 2024, will front the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for NAIDOC Week.’s songs will be heard in new orchestral arrangements by the Melbourne Sydney Orchestra’s young composer-in-residence, Alex Turley. Artwork from Sultan’s long-time collaborator Jarra Karalinar Steel, commissioned by the MSO, will adorn the auditorium.
Between the live performances, a playlist compiled by assistant First Nations curator Liam Keenan will be heard. Dubbed Music from Malabar Mansion after the nickname given to the Long Bay Correctional Complex, it features songs that have been written, performed and recorded by men and women in NSW jails as part of the Songbirds project run by the Community Restorative Centre.

NAIDOC Week will be one of your final chances to make up your own mind, as the exhibition – which also includes an overview of Namatjira’s singular career – closes on July 21.
