Police evacuated parts of the centre and inspected the bag that Kirk left outside the Sainsbury’s store.Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday how Kirk hadn’t been suffering from any mental illness at the time of the incident. Kirk appeared at the court to plead guilty to a charge of conducting himself in a disorderly manner by telling emergency services he’d planted a bomb and causing the centre’s evacuation.
Kirk made a comment that “something would happen” if he went outside, the court heard, and he remained behind on his own. The flatmate called Kirk at 7.30pm and found he was still in the centre and acting in a “strange manner”, telling him “something would happen if he left”. Officers carried out the evacuation while senior colleagues with firearms and explosives experience, Inspector Catherine Thorburn and Sergeant Roderick Chill, arrived on scene.
