Natalie Nalepa put in countless miles on road to Hall of Fame
Class of 2022:Nalepa has been immortalized before. On the strength of collecting SWC championships in five events as a senior in 1991 , she was inducted into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame in 2017.“It’s such an honor when there are so many phenomenal athletes out of this city,” she said.
Besides her track success, Nalepa won consecutive SWC cross country titles in 1990 and 1991 while leading the Bears to conference crowns each year. The 1990 team became the first Baylor women’s squad in any sport to qualify for an NCAA finals. “Natalie knew herself, knew her body and knew what she wanted to do,” Hill said. “Distance runners must be self-motivated. That was Natalie.”“She could go and go and go and never stop,” he said.
“I remember them praying for my brother and wearing yellow ribbons,” she said. “They are still my closest friends.” An accomplished runner herself, Ruth Nalepa told her daughter to “go easy” and not worry about the competition.Nalepa did just that. The crowd erupted in cheers as she surged ahead.Hall, who would win the state 1,600 meters in 1988, finished second, seven seconds behind Nalepa. Treadwell came in third.
