US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s planned trip to Taipei would “create another crisis” for President Joe Biden and his administration, says The New Republic writer Alex Shephard.
He said the visit would “ratchet up” tensions with Beijing “immediately” – while the strategic benefit of the trip is “not entirely clear”.
“Taiwan is obviously a big concern for Beijing but it’s not necessarily the most pressing issue at the moment,” he told Sky News Australia. “If Pelosi were to visit Taiwan with the delegation I think it would immediately rocket up to the top of the list right now.”
