Nannup Four Search Intensifies in Western Australia Bushland
Nannup Four, Northcliffe, Western Australia

Volunteers search Northcliffe bushland for the Nannup Four, missing since 2006. The group includes the McDougall family and citizen searchers.

A team of citizen searchers, including a mental health nurse from Bunbury, is scouring dense bushland in Northcliffe, Western Australia, for the remains of four people who disappeared nearly 20 years ago. The missing are Chantelle McDougall, her young daughter Leela, her boyfriend Simon Kadwill, and their housemate Tony Popic, collectively known as the Nannup Four.

Background of the Nannup Four Disappearance

The group vanished from a farmhouse they rented in Nannup, about 100km south of Northcliffe, in 2006. They left a note on the door claiming they had moved to Brazil, but when Chantelle's family could not reach her, they alerted authorities. Their bank accounts have remained untouched since.

In the days before they disappeared, either Popic or Kadwill bought two bus tickets to Northcliffe. Months later, prisoners clearing tracks near Northcliffe found women's clothing and reported a smell of death. These clues have fueled speculation about their fate.

The case has baffled the region and the world for nearly two decades, with no sign of the four ever being found.

Volunteer Search Efforts in Northcliffe Bushland

Teili Rafferty, a mental health nurse from Bunbury, traveled nearly 200 kilometers to join the search. It is the longest she has been away from her two young daughters. She said she told them that if they were lost in the bush, they would want someone to come and help find them.

Rafferty and her friend Emily Hugessen are part of a diverse team that includes geologists, former detectives, prospectors, and family members. They are spending time away from their families to assist in the search for the Nannup Four.

The team is led by Matt Strickland, vice-president of the Tasmanian missing persons search group Find Our Lost Loved Ones. Each morning, he gathers the group around a campfire at the local holiday park for a briefing.

They are focusing on an area of bushland identified as a place of interest, about 100km south of Nannup. The terrain is unforgiving, with thick undergrowth and a lack of water. Recent bushfires in 2015 burned much of the area, but the search continues.

Volunteers have been battling rain and humidity to clear overgrown tracks, allowing a team of cadaver dogs to comb the area for human remains. Despite the challenges, they remain determined to find answers.

Family and Community Support in the Search

Among the searchers are Jim and Cath McDougall, Chantelle's parents, who have driven from their home in regional Victoria. They work alongside volunteers each day, sifting through the forest undergrowth for any signs of their daughter and granddaughter.

Mrs. McDougall expressed her gratitude, saying that for all these years not much has happened, and for all these people to turn out and help is absolutely amazing.

Ethan Watsham, a 24-year-old hospitality worker, and his older brother Jordan have been part of the search since day one. They are familiar with WA's bush but have never participated in a missing persons search. Watsham said the closest thing he had done was emu bobbing in cadets because someone lost a radio.

The brothers were due to return home to Perth before the search ended, but they changed their minds. They know they may not get the answers they came for, but they want to know they did everything they could to help Jim and Cath McDougall, two strangers who have become their friends.

In the face of tragedy and unanswered questions, the unlikely group of strangers has forged an unexpected camaraderie. There are moments of levity, such as a spirited chorus of Happy Birthday sung to Watsham, who turned 24 during the search.

The search continues, with the team using walkie-talkies and radio gear to coordinate their efforts. They are determined to provide closure to the McDougall family, even as they face the harsh realities of the bushland.
