There has been a marked increase in the number of students struggling to meet numeracy standards - and other key metrics are also lagging - according to a Productivity Commission analysis of Naplan results.

Other key metrics, including raising the attainment rate of year 12 or equivalent and increasing the number of students attending school 90 per cent or more of the time were also lagging, in a worrying sign for the nations education sector.

Equally concerning was a drastic fall in the number of students attending school 90 per cent or more of the time, which was down almost 20 per cent from 2021 to 2022. The Productivity Commission also showed governments had made"no improvement" to the amount of students completing year 12, or an equivalent qualification, following a strong period of growth from 2016 to 2021.

The proportion of students in the bottom two bands for reading"decreased significantly" for students in years 5 and 7, but"increased significantly" for the proportion of children in years 3 and 9.
