As it continues its search for signs of ancient microbial life, NASA's Mars rover recently used its self-driving smarts to navigate its trickiest route yet.
NASA’s Mars rover, Perseverance, has used its self-driving smarts to successfully navigate its most challenging route since arriving on the planet two-and-a-half years ago. Even better, its advanced technology meant it took just a third of the time that it would’ve taken other NASA Mars rovers.
Related The straight-line route through Snowdrift stretches 1,706 feet , but by the time the rover exited the opposite side of the field, it had logged 2,490 feet , the route made longer by all of its maneuvering around the boulders. The successful drive by the car-sized rover is a testament to the team that designed Perseverance and its autopilot system.

The OSIRIS-REx capsule is in the bag.NASA reports that the OSIRIS-REx capsule “has been bagged” and is flying suspended from a helicopter to the space agency’s clean lab to recover samples gathered from the Bennu asteroid in 2020. When it gets to NASA’s on-site clean room, scientists will remove the canister containing the sample to be opened at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas on Tuesday. Check out this gallery of screenshots from NASA’s live coverage. NASA had a photographer on site, so we’ll probably get some much nicer shots of the process soon.
