The 2020 NASCAR Cup champion finished fourth at Daytona on Saturday night, but needed a win to get in.
Chase Elliott knew he had to win Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona to gain entrance into the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, but when the checkered flag waved, he was three positions short.
Elliott, named NASCAR's Most Popular Driver each of the past five years, has been a fixture in the Playoffs each of the past seven seasons, and he won the championship in 2020. He's made the Championship 4 field for the last race of the season each of the past three seasons. Elliott said he felt like the team had an “okay chance,” but runner-up Brad Keselowski and race winner Chris Buescher “just worked so well together.”
