NASCAR should probably have some rules.

In 2010, NASCAR was in the middle of what turned out to be a long malaise. The series responded with a simple decree, one that seemed to not only shy away from penalizing intentional contact but actively push it:"Boys, have at it." Just four points-paying races into that season, the series saw arguably its worst intentional crash everat the high-speed Atlanta Motor Speedway, leading Keselowski's car to roll into a fence at speed.

But the new philosophy continued, rarely interrupted by incidents so bad that penalties of some sort had to be handed out. Notable examples that ended in suspensions, like Kyle Busch's wreck of Ron Hornaday in a Truck Series race later in 2010 and Matt Kenseth's season-altering wreck of Joey Logano in the 2015 playoffs, were exceptions in cases where an act was so flagrant a response was needed. Last weekend, one such case did not even end in a suspension.

, was fighting IndyCar veteran Sage Karam for position in last Saturday's Xfinity Series race at Road America for a few corners before he lost his patience. Karam was racing him hard, which he had a problem with. As this is NASCAR, where on-track driving standards disputes are solved by boys having at it, Gragson decided to have at Karam by spinning him intentionally on the track's fast second straight.

Despite widespread anger throughout the industry, Gragson was not suspended. He was not put on probation and his playoff position was not hurt in any way. Instead, the two-time 2022 Xfinity Series winner was handed a $75,000 cash fine and a penalty of 30 regular season points.

Gragson was at least penalized, though. Other flagrant intentional wrecks, particularly those in battles for wins, have not been discouraged at all. In the years since Austin Dillon
