South Australia will introduce legislation to form its own Voice to Parliament which plans to be operating before the Federal Government’s referendum later this year.

As opposition leader in 2019 Peter Malinauskas committed to delivering the Uluru statement from the Heart, pledging to establish the Voice if Labor won Government in March 2022.

Premier Peter Malinauskas is hoping to have the First Nations Voice Bill 2023 passed by Easter and have the body up and running by the middle of the year. This is a nation-leading opportunity for South Australia to demonstrate to the rest of the country the benefits of giving our First Nations people greater say in the development of laws and policies that affect their lives.“Here in South Australia we have the opportunity to lead the way and demonstrate to the rest of the country that this is a good thing to do that brings people together and enhances our democracy as a whole,” he told reporters.
